Blair Early Childhood Center has always and continues to be a leader in Arts education. Our art program is constantly evolving as we seek to provide rich and varied experiences encompassing all art disciplines (Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama). We view the arts as the heart of our curriculum and the means through which our young students learn. At Blair we are dedicated to the development of the “whole child” and the skills that will enable our students to participate in society to the best to their abilities. Exposure to the arts and engagement in the creative process promotes the development of skills necessary for success; imagination, problem solving, creative and critical thinking skills, self-expression and emotional well-being.

As the Art Liason and visual arts teacher for our school, I am responsible for designing and implementing the visual arts curriculum, arranging in school performing arts experiences, and fostering community partnerships for art residencies. At the core of our program is our visual arts curriculum. Students are engaged in a variety of activities (coloring, drawing, painting, gluing, cutting, molding, etc.), using a variety of tools (paint brushes, stamps, foam brushes, paint rollers, scissors, rolling pins and, of course, their hands) and mediums (crayons, markers, oil pastels, paints, glue, decoupage, modeling dough, clay ceramics, etc.) to create a variety of art forms and works of art. Students are exposed to the works of famous artists, history of art, elements of art, principles of design, and vocabulary of the arts. Most importantly, students learn that art is a form of creativity and self-expression. I believe that “every child is an artist” and engagement with the arts, in all its forms, lifts the spirit and feeds the soul!
